Changing the world, one cup at a time.
At the suggestion of a friend, Tommy applied to Eleni’s Coffee & Tea in Tallahassee in 1999, thus beginning his love for coffee. It was here that he first became a barista and saw the real difference between freshly roasted and freeze dried. During their relationship, Rebekah came in to Eleni’s to see Tommy but usually ended up staying and hanging out because she loved the atmosphere and chatting with the other customers.
In 2005 Tommy and Rebekah decided to open a coffee shop of their own but Tommy needed to finish school first so they started planning and saving. During this time Rebekah learned about fair trade coffee which ensures that the people working on coffee plantations are treated fairly and paid enough to feed and support their families. Though not always the case, many workers not paid fair trade wages currently live in extreme poverty. Tommy and Rebekah believe that “The worker deserves his wages.” Luke 10:7 and “Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy.” Deuteronomy 24:14-15. Their belief is that it is important to pay a little more for the coffee to ensure worker’s fair wages. Our fair trade offerings are also organically grown, please ask for details if you are interested in supporting fair trade or organics as our offerings change periodically.
We not only want to change the world in coffee regions though- we want to change your world as well. Bean Around the World is a place to come, relax and enjoy your time here. If you can’t stay for a cup, take a pound home for fresh coffee each morning before you leave the house.
